ANESTHESIOLOGISTE pour HAITI

Vacancy for an anesthesiologist in Haiti.

Dear colleagues, Médecins Sans Frontières  Belgium" is looking for an anesthesiologist who wants to work with us and our Haitian colleagues and friends during 3 9 mths.

The candidate may begin as fast as possible. The candidate will be involved in a training project in anesthesia and emergency care in St. Marc. The project is situated in the Artibonite Province of Haiti where we restarted since july 1998 a reference hospital for 14 dispensaries, covering a district of 280.000 inhabitants. It is a pilot project to the Mininistry of Health who has great expectations off it. The major problem in Haiti is the lack (or refusal) of specialists to practice in the interior. Former attempts of attracting Haitian specialists have failed. Access of the population to public health care is very limited: expensive Private medicine is too often the only issue.

The chosen angle of attack is to have the hospital properly running. This is accomplished by:

    - rehabitation of the hospital,
    - training nurses for anaesthesia
    - training of general doctors to become "tropical doctors" who will be assuring 24h service.

We hope that in this way the hospital will become atractive enough for Haïti specialists to take over in due time. Contacts have already been established. The project follows the principles of the "health care district concept"  of the OMS enforced by the EC (main fundraiser).  The mission is a real challenge for an anesthesiologist who likes training (and working) in a developing country, where conditions of life are peaceful and rather pleasant (except for the garbage training all over). The workload is high. Good knowledge of French is mandatory. The training that has to be given should be well structured. A curriculum for the training program as well as further support will be provided by us. The project is respecting the economic and infrastructural constraints of Haiti.

I would be very pleased if you could forward this vacancy wherever you think it may be useful. I am always prepared for further information on the project itself. For administrative info (on MSF, payment, etc...) I include the coordinates of Thierry Tenret, our Human Resources officer in Brussels.

Much obliged and kind regards,

Peter Rosseel, MD, anesthesiologist

ANESTHESIOLOGISTE en HAITI

Médecins sans Frontières-Belgium is looking for an anesthesiologist who wants to do a mission in Hait for a duration of 3 -12 mths. The candidate can commence as fast as possible.

>MSF has an important project in the Artibonite Province of Haiti where we are relaunching the (thus far non functional) hospital, which is supposed to be a reference hospital for 14 dispensaries, covering a district of 280.000 inhabitants. The whole district health care and reference system has to be resucitated. The project is a pilot one to the Min of Health who has great expectations in it. The major problem in Haiti is the lack or refusal of specialists to practice in the interior. Former attempts of attracting Haitian specialists have failed. Access of the polulation to public health care is caricatural: expensive Private medicine is what remains.

>The new angle of attack is to restart the hospital, train nurses for anaesthesia and general doctors to become "tropical doctors" who have to assure 24h service. In the mean time the hospital will be rehabilitated. We hope that this way the hospital will become atractive enough for H specialists to take over. The project follows the principles of the "health care district concept" of the OMS enforced by the EC (main fundraiser).

>I just finished a consultancy mission over there and prepared the basics conditions in order to allow a smooth and quick start. The mission is a challenge for an anesthesiologist who likes training (and working) in a developing country, where conditions of life are peaceful and rather pleasant (except for the garbage training all over). The workload is high. Good knowledge of French is mandatory. Training will be structured, curriculum will be provided by MSF as well as additional support.

>If you are interested please contact myself or Luc Ameloot or Human Resources officer in Brussels. I am always prepared to give further information on the project itself.
